Don’t miss the excitement of the Vancouver 2010
Olympic Torch Relay

As the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games draw nearer, all eyes are turning to the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, which has begun winding its way across every province and territory of Canada. The Olympic Torch Relay is an opportunity for Canadians from coast to coast to coast to carry the Olympic Flame, which will travel 45,000 km over 106 days in the longest relay held within the borders of any host country in history.

RBC will be at the forefront of the relay, travelling with each torchbearer who will carry the Olympic Flame and at all 189 community celebrations along the route. As the relay travels through our Canadian towns and cities, it will foster enthusiasm and national pride in this once-in-a-lifetime Olympic experience. We invite you to join us!

Be part of Olympic history

Lining the relay route is a great opportunity to support a torchbearer from your community.

At RBC branches on the route, we will show our pride by hanging banners and cheering on our torchbearers. We’ll also be handing out commemorative tambourines to all participants, so we can encourage them by making as much noise as possible! It’s guaranteed to be an inspiring day for everyone who attends.

The RBC Create a Better Canada Experience

At the celebration sites, RBC will also host Olympic Winter Games themed tents. There, you’ll be able to meet our RBC Olympians, get their autographs and pose for a souvenir photo with a torch. You can even test your own potential in a virtual snowboard race and a hockey shootout.

At the heart of each celebration site will be an interactive, mobile sustainable living exhibit, where you can discover how to create a more energy efficient and sustainable future for yourself and your family.

Harnessing the spirit of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the exhibit is divided into bronze, silver and gold-themed areas. Each area illustrates — through fun interactive exhibits you can explore together as a family — ways that you can take direct action in your own home to reduce your environmental footprint.

  • In the bronze section, for example, you may see many things you are already doing — or have thought about doing — in your home to help conserve energy and water. These include using energy efficient light bulbs, installing timers, switching to lower flow faucets and using rain barrels.
  • In the silver section, you’ll learn about leading-edge technologies such as hot water on demand and heat recovery systems, as well as the energy savings you can achieve by making home improvements such as installing better windows, boosting insulation, or upgrading to more efficient appliances.
  • In the gold section, you’ll discover the newest technologies that are helping us to consume less power — and even generate our own — such as geo-thermal heating and cooling systems, solar energy and wind turbines. And you’ll find out about what some of the newest homes are doing to bring energy and water efficiency to a much higher standard than ever before.

The exhibit even has a working wind turbine and solar panels that will generate power to help fuel the celebrations on site!

At the celebration site, you’ll receive a passport to the RBC Create a Better Canada Experience with information about the Olympic Games, sustainability, and a commemorative Visa gift card that you can keep as a souvenir, or load as a gift to your favourite Olympic Fan.

Coast to coast to coast

The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay began on October 30, 2009, with the Arrival Ceremony in Victoria, B.C. From there, the relay is travelling a 45,000 km circle across all three territories and through the Atlantic Provinces, before heading westward. On its journey, the Olympic Flame will visit more than 1,000 communities and places of interest, and will be carried by 12,000 torchbearers.

The relay will culminate at BC Place on February 12, 2010, with the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, signalling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Find out when the excitement will be coming to your community or province, and find out if someone you know is a torchbearer in the RBC Carry the Torch contest. View daily updates from the relay, live posting and Twitter updates at rbc.com/carrythetorch.
